Review: Sooty ABC Learn the Alphabet DVD – Mummascribbles

I loved Sooty as a child. There was one particular episode that I had on video (yes, video!) that was called Sooty & Superdog and featured Sweep thinking he was a Superdog coming up against Jeff Capes! There was another favourite that featured Duncan Goodhew (an ex Olympic swimmer for those too young to know him), that also had me giggling. So when I received an email asking if I’d like a copy of the new educational Sooty DVD to review with Zach, I thought it would be a nice way to introduce him to one of my old favourites.

About the DVD

Sooty ABC Learn the Alphabet has been created to support the early years curriculum. As stated on the front of the box, it’s created by experts, loved by kids and trusted by parents. It comes with an A-Z poster chart and ROM content.

What we thought of the DVD

I have to pick the right moments with Zach because he isn’t a huge tv fan. The first couple of times I tried to watch it with him was when he was home feeling poorly and I probably knew I shouldn’t have bothered because although he was looking at the screen, he was so worn out he fell asleep!

I tried again yesterday with much more success. He doesn’t have a long enough attention span to sit through an entire DVD yet but he was certainly interested in this for the periods of time that it held his attentionl The programme starts with Sooty proving he can spell his name and then sees them visit the Wookey Hole Caves which is a real place in Somerset and looks amazing! While there, they go through the alphabet and have to find things beginning with the letter they are on. I have no doubt that as Zach gets a little older, he’ll have fun finding the things they are looking for as it’s really involving in that way. At one point there was a kite on the screen and he pointed and said ‘it’s flying’ so it was clear to me at that point that he was actually watching it and paying attention!

I really like that it’s an educational version of the show. It means that if he is watching it, he is hopefully taking in all the words and letters whilst having fun. That’s what we want for our children right?!

Is there anything we didn’t like?

There isn’t anything that Zach didn’t like. For me, as an ex Sooty fan, no-one can beat Matthew Corbett, but Richard Caddell does do a great job.

I was sent this DVD for the purpose of this review however all thoughts and words are my own.

Let's talk about forties skin – Mummascribbles

maximios

I entered my forties in 2022 so am now swiftly heading to 42. It’s quite amazing how it only feels like yesterday that 40 was around the corner and we are now almost two years on. I wish time would slow a bit, but I know it won’t  – at least not while life is chaotic with the juggle of kids, jobs, and life! I’m sure one day it’ll slow down, but by then, I’ll probably be wishing for all the things I have now to return again, so I do try to savour it!

Anyway, back to the point of this post. The post-turning 40 skin dilemma.

Now, let me tell you something. I never got spots as a kid. Well, not never – if I did get one, it was just the one and it was massive, but generally my skin was fresh as a daisy and I had no outbreaks and I was pretty darn pleased with that. I know that the husband had really bad acne as a teenager, so it’s something I’m prepared for with the boys if they develop it – I know that the husband was prescribed something that cleared it up completely so I’ll be jumping straight on that bandwagon if they do get it.

But me? Nada. Beautiful skin. Oh how I am glad that I revelled in that skin while I did, because I can tell you right now, that my skin post-40 is bad. I know I don’t drink as much water as I should, but I genuinely don’t think it’s down to that. I believe it is absolutely down to my changing hormones as I navigate the next stage of my womanly life.

The problem is, trying to work out what is best for it! There are so many products out there and it can get very expensive finding the right one. I used to be a Tropic girl – I absolutely loved it and swore by it. But when I started getting these breakouts, it wasn’t working as well, and it was getting increasingly expensive, so I moved onto something else . That something else is Wildmint Cosmetics which I do absolutely love. It makes my skin feel really fresh and lovely, but has it helped with my new spotty self? No, it hasn’t. I have quite a bit of it left so I’ll continue to use it, but then I’ll be trying the next thing. I have seen good things about Facetheory which keeps popping up on my FB ads, but I have a feeling I am just putting money into things that ultimately aren’t going to work. But equally, these outbreaks are doing my brain in and some of them are just there permanently – particularly the ones on my cheeks.

So, my question is, does anyone else suffer with the forties spot outbreaks, and if so, have you managed to find a magic lotion for them. A bonus would be if it can help deal with those ‘fine lines’ that seem to be developing here, there and everywhere!

I’m off now to gulp down several glasses of water and mentally note that I really need to drink more of the stuff – I know it might at least help, even if it doesn’t rid them completely!

P.S. I know my eyebrows need sorting…haven’t had a chance to get to the salon!!

Review – adding to my dressing gown collection with IDENTITY LINGERIE – Mummascribbles

I was gifted this product for the purpose of this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own

I love a dressing gown I do! It’s the first thing I put on in the morning, and whenever I get home and know I haven’t got to go back out again, the bra comes off, the pj’s go on, along with the dressing gown. Heck, I sometimes even pop it all on when I know I’ve got to go back out! Only on a Wednesday night when I have to pick Zach up at 9pm from scouts, and it’s all hidden under my massive coat! I should add that I don’t do this in the warmer weather when I can’t cover it all up 🤣

I have my big fleecey gown and my big hooded blanket style one that is just so warm on those cold winter nights, but when the spring/summer rolls around, both of those things can become a bit too warm, and so a lighter, cooler option was something I should have added to my collection but hadn’t quite got around to.

So when IDENTITY LINGERIE got in touch to see if I wanted to review one of their products and I saw that they sell beautiful dressing gowns, it was the perfect opportunity to get that cooler gown into my collection.

IDENTITY LINGERIE is a family-run UK brand creating ethically handcrafted garments. Their lingerie and nightwear are available in a wide range of sizes, designs and customisation options and are ethically handcrafted by a team of highly skilled artisans based in Ukraine.

I opted for their long satin dressing gown in green because I thought the colour looked divine and it looked so classy too.

When it arrived, it was in a box, wrapped in paper and it felt like I was opening something really special and luxurious. Which it turned out, I was!

Held together in it’s own little protective bag which is made of the same luxury material that the dressing gown is, I unpacked it and was immediately wowed! It was so smooth and silky and I couldn’t wait to put it on.

Put it on I did, and well, I kinda felt like a princess. I know that probably sounds ridiculous but you know when you put something on and it just feels so divine, and you know it costs quite a lot of money and so it feels really special. That’s how it made me feel. Oh and incredibly sexy too! It’s long and glam, but comfy and cool. It’s everything I would want in a spring/summer gown! It has a gorgeous thick belt to tie it up with, and it stays tied up pretty well considering it’s a slippery satin material.

Now the weather is starting to warm up, this will be my go-to dressing gown first thing in the morning and when I come home. The fluffy fleece can have a wash and a rest ready for later in the year, and I can wander around feeling like a million dollars in this beauty 🤣

Green is my colour I think, don’t you?!

The rollercoaster of a toddler meltdown – Mummascribbles

I will state here that not all toddlers are the same and you parents will experience different variations of tantrums. We don’t have a hugely tantrumming child; he’s always been a very placid, sweet natured little boy. BUT. This sweet natured little thing can and does have the mother of all meltdowns. The funny thing is, I’m always prepared for them, I know exactly when one is going to occur.

Take last night for example. We get home from nursery, it’s 6.15pm, I ask him if he wants to watch some TV and he chooses Sooty. All fine you say?! Then I ask him if he wants to take his coat and shoes off.

When his answer is ‘no’ – that’s it. That is the moment I know we are going to have a tantrum of some kind. That is when I start preparing myself for what is to come.

In order for me to delay the inevitable tantrum, I leave him in his coat, tell him to sit down and go and get him his pancake and cup of milk and he sits watching Sooty (this is his first favourite DVD), quiet and peaceful and VERY VERY tired!! Can you see just how tired he is in this photo?

Yep, this photo is another sure sign that we were going to have a tantrum. That tiredness right there, along with he fact that he needs a bath. Those two things are going to cause a boom!

So, in this instance, and because I know the other half is going to be home just before seven; I delay the bath for that time in order for there to be two of us to get him out of his coat, shoes and rest of his clothes.

The other half arrives home, Zach acts happy! It’s deceiving! I inform other half that the coat has had to stay on and therefore there’s probably going to be ‘issues’. The bath is run and ready and so it’s an immediate case of clothe extraction. This is when tantrum begins. At this point it is minimal but it takes the two of us to wrestle undress him and then he is placed in the bath, much to his annoyance. He always calms down after a minute or so, after he’s stamped his feet a few times, turned in a circle and somehow not slipped over and smashed his head open. Then the rest of bath time is fun.

Until we have to get him out!

Then it all goes wrong.

Last night, unfortunately I had to brush his teeth. We usually give him a chance to attempt to do it himself but as he was already crying, I knew it wasn’t even worth it but equally, I knew his teeth needed brushing. Cue daddy holding his arms down, mummy attacking him with the toothbrush, Zach screaming and thrashing in protest and the neighbours questioning whether they should be calling social services.

After successfully brushing his teeth as best I could with him biting down on the toothbrush to try and stop me, I picked him up and walked down the hall to the front room. This right here…this is where said meltdown happened!

Oh my he went into one, before we’d even got to the front room he was thrashing about in my arms. I stood him on the floor and all hell broke loose. We had screaming sobs (you know the ones), we had foot stamping (you know the fast kind that is only really necessary when doing one of those legs and booty exercise classes), and we had a little boy who was tired, emotional, wailing the house down.

He wanted his towel on but he didn’t want me to put it on him, he wanted to get up on the sofa but his little body that was dealing with this meltdown (ie he’d gone jelly like), couldn’t get up on the sofa but he didn’t want me to help him.

Of course, I know at this point to just leave him, to allow him to scream and cry and to work out that actually this is all very silly and that he should just stop crying. I’ve tried numerous times to sooth him, to cuddle him, to talk to him.

It just doesn’t work.

It makes him worse and simply prolongs the meltdown!

The only thing that does work is to leave him to ride it out while making sure he’s not at risk of any harm and to try and hide the laughter that is accumulating within when this gorgeous little placid two year old has turned into Hulk (totally failed at this bit last night…it was hilarious!)

For some reason, the other half still hasn’t quite worked this out and will every so often attempt to resolve the situation. Of course at this point I moan at him to just leave him alone to deal with it. He does, although I can see he finds it very hard to sit through without intervening. I however just use the opportunity to check my Twitter!

And then?

Then something will cause this wailing, screaming child to stop. It will be like a switch has been flicked off and that this full on meltdown never really happened. Peace is resumed.

Last night, it was a glimpse of the fish tank. He suddenly decided that he absolutely needed to play with the little magnetic cleaner thing, suddenly stopped wailing, walked over to the fish tank and happily tried cleaning the glass.

Meltdown had stopped, he was happy again, I got a cuddle and we successfully managed to get him moisturised and into his pyjamas. We successfully managed to get him up to his bedroom, into bed (after our nightly game of hide and seek!), and after not long, he fell into a snoring sleep.

And this lovely people, is what happens in a Zach meltdown. This is exactly what happens every time he has one. Sometimes he has ones that aren’t as meltdownish as others, but if he’s going to go for it full pelt, this is it. I like that it’s always the same, I like that it’s easy to spot the signs, know what’s coming and know exactly how to deal with it (ie do nothing!). Of course I’d rather they just didn’t happen but when a tired little man doesn’t know how to deal with this feeling of the world (or his parents), being against him (we’re not of course, we just want to get him to bed!), there are no other ways for him to deal with it. And I think it’s so important to remember that when any child has a meltdown, it really is because they just don’t know how to deal with this explosion of emotions.

Me and you? We’d probably have an argument with whoever is pissing us off, but toddlers can’t do this and we wouldn’t want them to. That would be far worse than any meltdown. All they can do is show us exactly how they are feeling. And that’s by doing this…

Note: This photo was taken a while ago. Whilst I wish that I could have taken one last night, the meltdown was bad enough that I didn’t think it would be fair to shove a phone camera in his face and potentially lengthening the meltdown!

If you like what I do here, I’d love you to vote for me in the MAD Blog Awards!

About Me – Mummascribbles

maximios

Hello there, thanks so much for stopping by.

I am Lisa, a mid-thirties mumma to two gorgeous boys, living in Hertfordshire with the other half who is set to become ‘The Husband’ in 2020.

I was previously a full time working mum – commuting, going away to events and seeing the eldest boy for about an hour a day. I was miserable and struggling with the lack of mummying that I got to do.

So what changed?

At the end of my second maternity leave, I had worked hard enough on this blog to enable me to hand in my notice and walk away from the regular day job. I suddenly found myself in the very wonderful position of being a stay at home / work from home mum.

And whilst it is utterly wonderful, it is also so very new to me. I suddenly have so many roles that sometimes it can be a little overwhelming. I am the juggler of all balls.

I am the school run mum, the cleaner, the cook, the childcarer, the shopper. And at the same time, I am the writer, the social media manager, the photographer, the reviewer, the admin girl (all of which has to fit into nap times and evenings!). And somewhere in there, I always aim (but fail) to fit in an exercise regime of some form!

Quite often I feel like I am failing at it all. Other times, I totally have it all held together like super glue.

When I previously found myself in the kitchen, breastfeeding a baby whilst mashing potatoes for the biggest boy – I gave myself a hell to the yeah!

When I managed to get to school on time, write 3 blog posts during the smallest one’s two hour nap, and feed he and I before the next school run, I was totally high fiving myself.

But then, when I look at the bathroom that needs cleaning, the floors that need mopping, and the six year old that is disregarding every single thing I say whilst the two year old is having a tantrum of epic sorts, I am beating myself up about my failures!

I am regularly clock watching for the ‘back up’ to come home from work and wishing it was wine o’clock – even though I don’t really drink all that much!

I am the perfectly imperfect parent. Juggling life, work and two children – sometimes less than successfully. Skipping lunch to get the work done. Pretending the dust doesn’t exist. Surviving parenthood on tea and chocolate biscuits. And hot chocolate. And cake. (Hence the need for the exercise regime).

So how can I help you, you ask?

Quite often, I wonder that myself. But quite often, I find myself feeling all of these things and feeling so alone. Like everyone else has it sussed and there is just me, alone in my parenting and working tribulations. And that’s why I write this blog. So that others feeling that way, can know that they truly aren’t alone. Whether you are a work outside the home or work from home mumma, I have either been there and got the tear stained t-shirt, or I am living through it right now.

And as I work through this new life – work out the roles that I play and how the heck to get them all in order, I will share this wisdom, these insights, and the tools I use, to try and make daily life that little bit easier – for me and for you.

To help you get your chaos in order, by learning from my mistakes!

About the brood

First up is the other half. He is the backbone that keeps me upright on those toughest of days. He is the one that remembers to keep the plants and animals alive (we have a cat, a rabbit and some tropical fish!). And he is the biggest supporter of this little blog that I call my business 🙂

Next up is the Master Zachary. Six years old and full of the attitude of a teenager. He is beautiful, intelligent, funny, amazing. He is also the tiredest of tired after school, and the hyperest of hyper should he consume cake, sweets or whole chocolate biscuits! I love him to the bare bones, even though he does drive me crazy on a daily basis.

And then there is the smallest of us – Mr Oscar Pants! At 2 years old, he is the cutest, sweetest, most delightful little thing. Until he throws a tantrum and then by god, he is a devil. He is fiercely independent, afraid of nothing, but so loving of his parents that he doesn’t really like to be without one of us!

So there you go. Now you know a lot about me, why not tell me a bit about you? Leave me a comment, drop me an email, contact me on social media. Tell me your loves, your likes, your hates. Your wins, your struggles, your ‘hell yeah’ moments!

I want to know it all 🙂

Lisa

An afternoon treat with Asda Little Angels – Mummascribbles

Last Sunday was a very exciting day. Not only were our new wardrobes being put together by the other half, my sister and my brother in law but I had a very special event that I was heading off to. A few weeks back, a fab opportunity hit the mummascribbles inbox and I almost jumped with joy when I saw that it was on a Sunday. So often these things happen during the week and because I work, I simply can’t go.

The invitation was to head to The Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane and meet with the people behind Asda Little Angels. Not only was this event at the Dorchester but we would be served afternoon tea AND have a couple of pamper treatments in the spa. For a full time working, pregnant mummy of a three year old, this sounded like absolute bliss. So much bliss that I think I actually responded to the email almost immediately!

So, Sunday came along and I headed off up to London, leaving the others building wardrobes (well I couldn’t really help anyway!) and my nephew playing with Zach. I arrived at the Dorchester and immediately felt a little bit special. I mean I have never ever been to the Dorchester – it is such a lavish hotel, heck it’s such a lavish road itself, I have barely ever been to that part of London!

When I arrived in the reception, I could immediately see the small gathering of bloggers and joined them before we were taken down to the spa. I didn’t actually realise that the whole event was taking place down in the spa!

We were taken into the most gorgeous room where we could hang out for the afternoon and also where the presentation by Litle Angels was taking place. The presentation itself was so interesting – I was the only one in the room that has never used their nappies and by the end, there was no doubt in my mind that I would be trying this brand out when baby number two arrives.

Little Angels have been working hard on making their nappies the best they can and the newborn ones are so soft that they really do match other leading brands. In a recent Mother and Baby Magazine survey (total responses: 268, ran from 9th April to 9th May 2016), Little Angels not only out-performed Pampers and Aldi Mamia in all categories, ranking highest in terms of value for money/price, overall quality and absorbency, but they were also voted the preferred nappy brand.

Until I went to this event, I had no idea just how big the range is. From preemie to newborn, first pants to bedtime pants and swimming nappies to bed mats, they have covered everything that you could possibly need. Their first pants also come in a Peppa Pig design which I know for a fact would have been a massive winner for Zach!

One of the most important things I discovered was that the newborn nappies are the first to be enriched with the special Dreamskin® polymer which is clinically proven to soothe and protect skin. It helps to regulate skin temperature and helps to keep skin moisturised. Zach has always had very sensitive skin and I am therefore expecting the new baby to have similar, so knowing how wonderfully soft these are would really put my mind at rest.

Like I say, I was totally converted to Little Angels with all of the information that I was given and it was lovely to sit and have a feel of each one. I have tried other supermarket brands before when Zach was still in nappies and you really could tell the difference, but not with these!

After the presentation it was time to relax. We popped into the changing rooms to put on our robes and slippers (yes really!) and headed on back to ‘our room’. Suddenly I was being called in for my pregnancy massage. A whole 55 minutes of pure relaxation and it was amazing! I felt so refreshed afterwards. I love massages anyway but having one when you are pregnant just feels incredible.

Afterwards I went back to the room and gorged on the afternoon tea, which was absolutely delicious, whilst chatting to the other lovely bloggers. I was then whisked off for a manicure which I thoroughly enjoyed. I never seem to be able to find the time to sit and do my nails and if I do, I always find something to do afterwards and it smudges!

To say I had a wonderful time being pampered with Little Angels would be a bit of an understatement. It was AH-MAZING!

Thank you so much Little Angels – you made this mumma feel very special for an afternoon!

I’ve been nominated for ‘working parent blogger of the year’ at the mumandworking awards. If you’d like to vote for me just click on the image below to take you to the voting form!

Get personalised with JD Sports – Mummascribbles

As an event manager, I am often travelling around the country. The company I work for now like to use Glasgow quite a lot and so I often find myself boarding a plane and in fact I’ll be there this time next week waiting for my flight home!

Because it’s generally overnight stays, there is never any need to check in luggage and equally I find taking a little wheely case a bit much – have you ever tried shoving one of those things into the overhead compartment?! What I really need is a rucksack, and a rucksack that is mine, not the one that I nabbed off my sister a couple of months ago (promise I’ll give it back sis!).

When JD Sports got in touch to ask if I wanted to review their new personalised service and offered a selection of rucksacks to choose from, well how could I say no?! The free personalisation service is available on bags and caps and you can get three initials in either white or black stitching.

Of course I went for the prettiest one,  the girliest one, the one that would stand out a mile and that wouldn’t get lost among all the other bags that appear at events! And to top it all off, I could get my initials sewn into it, so that if someone did happen to have the same one as me,  I’d still know it was mine!

You can of course have any combination of three letters, it doesn’t have to be your initials. However that being said, the three initial personalisation would be perfect for your child’s school bag!  I wonder how many of you have bought school bags only for them to be already falling apart or even broken entirely?! I remember being at secondary school myself and having so many heavy books that I got through a number of bags!

The bag that I chose is such good quality and I quite happily get all of my clothes,  make up and toiletries  (of under 100ml as airlines allow!) And there is still space for my shoes! It’s also got a fab compartment for a laptop – just what I need for my work travels!

I’d highly recommend it along with the personalisation that can make one bag or hat distinguishable against all others.

I was sent a personalised rucksack from JD Sports for the purpose of this review but as always,  all thoughts and opinions are my own.
