Are the coming years a bad time to be getting a normal car? {AD} – Mummascribbles

Now, before the other half thinks I am trying to convince him that we need a new car, I am not! Even though ours is starting to feel a little on the small side, it is a lovely car, isn’t that old, and suits us OK. He does know that I would love a bigger car, but I equally know that we aren’t in the position right now to get one.
We do talk about it though (because I hint quite a lot), and we just can’t decide if even getting a new car is worth it in the long run. You see, the government plans to phase out sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. I know that probably doesn’t mean you won’t be able to drive them if you have one, but the long term impact would mean that the sell on value of used petrol and diesel cars will probably be zero. So we would be buying something that isn’t going to be worth anything in the future. 2030 is after all, only nine years away.

The main problem we (and many other people) have, is that electric cars are so flipping expensive. I mean have you seen the prices of them? Quite simply, we cannot afford one. And being that we have two growing kids and a largish dog, we couldn’t get away with buying a small electric car that is a bit cheaper. We need a decent sized car for us all to fit in.
And so there lies our issue. And that of many others who may be thinking about getting a new car. Or the many people learning to drive right now who probably haven’t even considered this issue. My Nephew has just started his driving lessons and will just be getting a cheap runaround for his first car, but what if after a few years he wants to get a new one? There is no way he could afford to buy an electric car. I mean, the insurance on a car for his age is already so high, to spend out so much on an electric one just wouldn’t be possible. At least with the insurance issue, you can get temporary insurance cover while you find the right one for you. You can’t find a temporary electric car to work out if it suits you well or not for the price!

I do understand that the whole electric car thing is a good thing. I really do. It just feels like gradually forcing everyone into having one, in such a short time-frame is a bit wrong. I’m sure it can’t just be us who can’t go looking at 30-40k family sized cars. Is it?
