Getting my craft on! – Mummascribbles
Three years ago, my mum bought me a sewing machine for Christmas. I was ridiculously excited and hadn’t expected it at all. I couldn’t wait to get it home and in use to make lots of pretty things. I have so many craft books at home from the likes of Kirsty Allsopp and I love all the pretty things I regularly see being made and I wanted to create them myself. Not long after Christmas I set up my sewing machine following the instructions that were supplied with it and it was in use – I then realised I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and other than a couple of uses, it has sat in its cover gathering dust.
Fast forward almost three years and my birthday came along. I hadn’t asked for anything in particular and so when my mum gave me an envelope that consisted of vouchers for a sewing workshop in Chelsea I was over the moon! I could finally get some tuition and learn how my machine works.
And so, yesterday I tootled on up to Chelsea to go to the Saturday Sewing Sessions studio. It’s owned by Arianna Cadwallader who has her own show on Channel 4 and the classes are run by either her or one of her ridiculously talented team. I was taught by Joelle and within seconds of meeting her, I knew I was at the right place. It was quite daunting at first going to such an establishment with my severe lack of sewing experience, but upon sitting down, I realised that all of my fellow students were in exactly the same boat.
The class that I went to was a 5 hour sewing boot-camp! It taught everything from threading up to sewing buttonholes (I learnt that my machine is extremely good at this!) and more. The two tasks that we had were to make a make-up a bag and a cushion cover.
The make-up bag was hard – getting that zip in place was tricky and I was a slow one but I got it finished
The cushion cover was much easier to make and I finally know how to sew a button on, even if it was a little loose!
I loved this class and am so thankful to my mum for buying me vouchers. I cannot wait to get my hands on my machine now – everyone will be getting make up bags and cushion covers for Christmas!! Here’s my finished articles
