Mummascribbles – Review: Magformers – Mummascribbles
Until I was followed by them on Twitter, I hadn’t ever heard of the toy company Magformers. I had a little look at their website and was amazed at how fantastic their stuff looked and how I would seriously consider getting it for Zach for his birthday. When I thanked them for making me discover them, they informed me that they’d actually just started working with bloggers and wondered if I would like to review one of their sets for my blog. Of course I said yes!! When I then told them that we were off on holiday, they rushed it through the post to me so that we could take it with us. I am so thankful for that!
About Magformers
Magformers are a collection of different shapes with magnetic sides that can be made into anything you want (although come with fab ideas!). Children can transfer 2D plane shapes to different 3D geometric structures. The pieces are clever in that they always connect and never reject! They are great for creativity and brain development and are ideal for ages 3+. The products on sale in the UK range from small sets of 20 pieces to a huge set of just under 300 pieces! It might take a while to save for that one!
Magformers UK have just set up a subsidiary in the UK but the toy itself has been very popular globally for many years. The biggest markets at the moment are in the US and South Korea. They are currently setting up their promotion stand in Hamleys for this summer.
All UK products conform to the current safety regulations and you can read all about that here.
What we thought of the product
We thought wow!
We were sent the Magformers Wow pack. It includes 20 pieces (5 squares, 1 boy square, 8 triangles and 2 sets of wheels), along with 22 illustrated designate to show exactly what you can do with them.
When I showed my other half the box, he was seriously impressed and I think just a little bit more excited than Zach was at that point as he didn’t really understand it until we sat down to play with them. When we did, his full attention was on them!
First of all, we built a cube. He matched all of the coloured pieces to the guide on the card and then I showed him how to pick it up and let it all magnetise together and then I let him do it – he thought that was just fab and we did it a few more times!
We then built a tetrahedron!
And after that, and because I’m a bit rubbish at these things, he sat down with daddy to build some of the mini-cars up.
He couldn’t have loved this any more than he did! Some of the mini-cars look like rockets, some look like trains, and some are just so super cool they look like something out of Star Trek! I’m still not sure who loves them more at this point but throughout the week we’ve been away they’ve been played with enthusiastically by both Zach and his daddy! In fact, one was built while Zach was asleep! That says a lot!
They are such a fantastic idea, I mean there surely isn’t a child out there who isn’t amazed by magnets and these magnetic pieces can be added together to make mini-cars, planar figures and cool pictures. They can be played with again and again and added to other collections too!
We found the quality really good too. In the week they’ve been played with, they’ve been through a lot. Zach found it real fun to drive it to the end of the table, let it fall to the floor and watch as the magnets explode apart! Despite this act of toddler destruction, the pieces are all still in one piece, with no breakages or chips! Although of course, I wouldn’t recommend this being a regular feature of play!
Is there anything we didn’t like?
There’s nothing not to like about this awesome toy. The only one slight frustrating thing is that they come apart quite easily because they are magnets balanced at all different angles and if you have a slightly heavy handed toddler like me, you might spend time having to put them back together but when he plays with it nicely, they are great to push along the floor and play with.
Overall these are a complete winner to Zach and daddy. In fact, daddy has requested that I look into whether there are any giant versions that he can build. I can see myself definitely adding to this collection come Zach’s next birthday.
We are very very thankful to the lovely people at Magformers for sending us this pack. You can check out all of their products at http://magformers.co.uk
We were sent this product for the purpose of this review but all words and thoughts are my own.
