Mummascribbles – The Mumba Bra – review and 10% discount code – Mummascribbles

Pregnant boobs.

They are a law unto themselves.

At the start of pregnancy, for most people, they are so sore. They may expand in size, they may remain the same but that pain is a sucker.

When the pain eases, they start to go through many changes, be it shape or position. And then, in the latter stages of pregnancy, when they start getting ready for baby to appear and naturally believe that they are about to be used for breast-feeding, they start to prepare colostrum and change once again. Boobs and pregnancy bring so many different appearances throughout.

Whilst all of that is going on, you are constantly in a state of wondering whether you need a new bra. I still had maternity bras at home from my last pregnancy and immediately used those when the time came for this pregnancy. The first one was lovely and comfy for a few weeks and then it got a bit tight, and then the weather got really hot and suddenly, on the underneath of my boobs, there was chaffing. It was gross – itchy and a bit sore. I immediately started using the other bra which was a lighter material and the chaffing disappeared and boobs returned to normal. And now? That bra is suddenly a bit tight and whilst the chaffing isn’t happening, I am getting seriously sweaty underboobs and all in all, there is a bit of discomfort there once again.

I was just getting to the point of thinking about buying a new bra when the lovely people from Mumba Bra got in touch to see if I would like to try out their maternity and nursing bra. Sometimes I think these people can read my mind, knowing that I really do need something. I had never heard of the Mumba Bra and there is a high chance that had I have gone and bought a bra from a shop, I still wouldn’t have discovered it. And that makes me sad!

The Mumba Bra was created by Elizabeth, who like a lot of us breast-feeding mums, found issues throughout her nursing days with her second child. Her problems were:

1. Remembering which breast she had fed from through the lack of sleep and general crap feeling in the aftermath of having a newborn and a 16 month old!

2. A distracted baby! They all do it don’t they? Get to that stage where everything around them is so much more interesting than what they are supposed to be focussing on.

This all resulted in engorged breasts (ouch) and sore nipples from where her daughter was tearing herself away to look at something else (ouch). If you have breast-fed your children, you know exactly what I am talking about.

And so, Elizabeth started to look at ways she could design a bra that would help to solve these problems and that’s when the Mumba Bra was invented.

So how does it differ to normal nursing bras?

For starters, it has very clever hooks. It has a drop-cup opening allowing for an easy one-handed release and discreet feeding experience. It also (which is the best thing) has two clasps on each side which are numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 and two are black and two are clear. These are to assist you in remembering which breast you last fed off – hallelujah! The method is as follows:

1. To feed, you always choose the lower number of the two hooks. So, if the left breast is on hook 1 and the right is on hook 2, you would choose number one.

2. When finished, return the hook to the higher consecutive number. So, if you are feeding and the opposite hook is on number 2, you would return the open clasp to hook 3.

3. Finally, when the hooks are on numbers 1 and 4, you always choose number 4. This is the only time when the lower number does not apply.

Then you have the differences between black and white. The black hooks (which are on numbers 1 and 4) signify a full breast and the clear hooks (on numbers 2 and 3) signify that you have fed and emptied that breast.

So basically, when you finish feeding, you close your bra onto a non coloured hook meaning that breast is empty and you move the hook on the other side to the coloured number so you remember that one is the one you need to feed from next.

Brilliant! Zach was a seriously regular feeder and sometimes it wasn’t easy to recognise which boob I had last used! To have something to remind me this time will be brilliant and I know that once I get used to remembering the way the numbering and colouring works, it’ll probably be one of those life-saving products!

The other design feature of this bra is the little bit of material that is underneath the cup and that rests on the top of your breast. It has the original BabyFocus print – a little black and white design to stimulate and hold your baby’s attention whilst feeding. We all know those books and newborn toys that have the black and white design because that is all the baby can actually see colour wise and this is exactly what this is for. It is right in front of their eyes and should stop baby from constantly pulling off to have a look around – the nosy little devils that they are! It also helps to cover the top of your breast making feeding a bit more discreet.

Of course, all of this is wonderful but is the bra itself any good?

Well yes, I think so. There are a couple of different designs – the Maya Comfort Bra and the Maya Freedom Bra. I chose to try out the Freedom Bra, mainly because it comes in purple and I felt like having a saucy colour for what is an un-saucy experience! It is a seamless bra that has a plunge v-neck and ruched cups and is made using an advance 4-way double layer stretch fabric to provide maximum comfort with support whilst adjusting to your changing body shape. This means that you can wear it as soon as you feel your breast size changing during your pregnancy through to nursing. I really wish I’d have found out about this earlier! It also has foam cups inside which can be taken out if required. I myself love a padded bra so it’s a massive winner!

The bra is honestly so comfortable. The material is soft and not irritating in the slightest and the fit is just perfect. It doesn’t really feel like I am wearing a bra which is really want we want isn’t it? It comes in sizes small, medium and large, the website has a full sizing guide and if you are unsure of which size to go for, just ask them! Elizabeth really helped me as I had no idea what size to get to see me through the end of pregnancy and into the nursing stage – the large has worked out perfectly so far!

I am thoroughly impressed with this gorgeous bra and absolutely love wearing it. I think it will be so helpful in the breast-feeding stage as well and I have full intentions of purchasing another one (because you can’t just have one bra can you?!).

I am also really chuffed to now be a Mumba Bra brand ambassador. This doesn’t mean that everywhere I go, I’ll be flashing my bra at people, but if people notice when breast-feeding and ask where it’s from, I will be super proud to tell them! It also means that I can offer you a brilliant 10% off from website purchases (and I’ll get a little bonus for you doing so!). The bras retail at £29 which is a bargain in my opinion. So, the code to use is MUMSCRIBS. Go buy one. Go on, they are brill!
