Oscar you are 16 months old – Mummascribbles
Where is the time going little man?
I wrote your last update two months ago and it feels only right that I should give you another one!
Last time you had just started walking, you were still giddy on your feet and wouldn’t walk outdoors. Oh how that has all changed. You are confidently walking now, and at times, even running a bit (until your legs can’t keep up with your feet and you stumble!). You absolutely love exploring the outdoors on your feet, although you do have this tendency to dart towards the road or try to walk in the opposite direction to the one we need to go in. This can result in a good old tantrum or two! The other morning you got to experience the feeling of all the leaves under your feet in the park and honestly, you thought it was the best thing ever!

Your communication was really starting to come out in the last update and two months on, I am pleased to report that it has come on in leaps and bounds. You haven’t said any clear cut words yet but by god can you tell us what you want. It’s normally either the Thomas stuff, a satsuma or a gingerbread man! You literally point us in the direction that we need to go, say ‘gah’ and that’s it – what you wanted is in your hands (unless it’s the third time you have directed me to the biscuit tin and then I have to tell you no!).
You now associate certain sounds with animals. If you see a duck or hear the word, you say ‘gah gah’ in an elongated form that resembles quack quack. If you see a dinosaur you growl and if you see a lion you roar! You have also started doing actions to some of your favourite nursery rhymes. You can do most of Wind The Bobbin Up (the pointing is the cutest!), you can do the start of Twinkle Twinkle, and you now move back and forth for Row The Boat (and you scream for a crocodile, roar for the lion and laugh for the shiver!).
Probably the cutest and most frustrating thing is your discovery of the word ‘no’ and the fact that it also comes with a head shake meaning you really mean it! It usually comes when you want to refuse your dinner, but is quite helpful when you are full up or genuinely don’t want something. I know that we are going to be hearing that little word more and more in the coming months!
Your most favourite thing to do right now is feed yourself yogurt. Oh boy you get in a mess but you are so determined to do it all by yourself every time. You have started to feed yourself other stuff too, although in the last week, you have taken to just decorating the tray of your highchair with food whilst we have another spoon, trying to get some of it your mouth! Your favourite breakfast is still Weetabix. If we give you porridge you just don’t enjoy it as much, whereas with Weetabix, you gulp every mouthful down!

We have really got our little routine in place now during the week. Monday’s are a bit of a free day, Tuesday we have Jo Jingles, Wednesday is the baby and toddler group over at the children’s centre, Thursday is another free day and Friday we go to a little playgroup at the church at the end of the road and are usually joined by Nannie at the end for the rest of the day!

It is safe to say that you are not a fan of being strapped into places. Your pushchair, the highchair, the car seat. You want to be free and get so frustrated every time you are strapped up! Although seeing as we have to do the school run and you will only nap in your buggy, I have to ignore your cries of frustration!
You are still sleeping in our bed. Heck, you even go to sleep on our bed at the moment because I gave up trying to get you in your cot. You are such a rubbish sleeper, waking several times in the evening sometimes and during the night too. I know that we need to do something to try and remedy it but I have no idea where to start! Although we are thinking of trying you in a bed in Zach’s room to see if that works at all. We need to figure out logistics and buy a mattress first though! Your brother has joined you on a couple of occasions when Daddy has been out for the evening!

Of course, you are also still breastfeeding. Mostly it is only at night but you manage to have the odd daytime one thrown in – mostly when you are having one of your epic tantrums and will not calm at anything else! It doesn’t happen very often though so it’s not the end of the world when it does.
You LOVE books. You are forever looking through books and love nothing more than going over to the shelf with all your ones on and bringing them over for us to look through. You point to all the pictures and turn the pages – sometimes I find you just sitting on the floor having a look through yourself and sometimes you make yourself comfy for a little read. It’s probably one of my most favourite things to see because it is just adorable. I don’t remember Zach being that bookish – but you my boy, you are a reader!

You love playing with toys, but in particular you love playing with the Thomas Take & Play stuff and you love stacking things. You got some perfect bits for Christmas that made you very happy!

You also really love pencils, crayons and felt tips – mainly to make a mess but also to try and draw sometimes!

You had your first haircut just before Christmas. I put it off as long as I could but it started looking a bit messy and there were bits of it that were clearly annoying you. As everyone said though, it is now growing back way thicker and it’s just the most luscious hair!
I have managed to leave you a bit just recently. I have taken Zach to a couple of birthday parties, leaving you at home with Daddy as they have clashed with your nap time, and Daddy and I even went out together and left you and Zach with your Aunt Coo. That was the first time you have been properly babysat and whilst you did have some tears when you woke from your nap (and a few other times), you totally survived it. There is still work to be done to make this easier for all but it’s serious progress my love!
You still absolutely love bath time. You get so excited when you see the water running and are just the happiest little splasher! In fact, you have a bit of an obsession about putting your hands into cold running water at the moment. Another thing that causes tantrums if we don’t let you do it! I mentioned your tantrums in the last update and they are still happening, still full out thrashing and screaming. Nightmare!
Well I think that is everything for this update. You are bounding along just perfectly 🙂
