I haven’t written one of these for a while. For some reason, back over the Summer holidays, the kids got out of the habit of reading. It was mostly to do with the fact that Oscar hadn’t long dropped his nap and by the time it was bed-time, he was so exhausted that it was straight to bed. Zach read bits here and there, but there wasn’t a specific set of books. The last couple of months though and we have been fully back into reading again. But typically, I kind of got out of the habit of writing these posts! So here I am, back again, and with a cracking set of books!
Here is what the kids read in October.

There Is No Dragon In This Story*

I can’t even tell you how many times I have read this book to Oscar – he absolutely loves it! We got this one from the library although I think I may add it to their book collection – maybe a Christmas pressie! It is about a dragon who wants to join in all the famous Fairytale stories, but nobody wants him to. But then something happens and they all need him, rendering him the hero of the book.
There are a few moments in this book that Oscar absolutely loves joining in with – the end of the book that isn’t actually the end (“that’s not the end Mummy”), a giant sneeze, and blowing fire. I love reading this book to him and Zach even enjoys listening to it as well.

Mixed – an inspiring story about colour*

It’s funny – I spotted this in the library just after Zach had been asking one of his friend’s Mum why they all have different colour skin (Mum is darker than her boys, one boy is darker than the other, and Daddy is white), and in particular, why they have different colour skin to him. She did a fabulous explanation of how their two colours mixed together to make the kids colours, but I thought this book would really help him to understand it even better.
It is a story of rivalry between the colours blue, red and yellow, and how they overcome their issues and start mixing together to make all different colours. Both the boys love this story and I highly recommend it if you are trying to explain the differences of skin colour and also about acceptance and celebrating difference.

Boogie Bear*

A very similar theme to the above – this book is about a polar bear who gets lost because all of the ice has melted, and finds herself on an island with a load of brown bears. But because she looks different to them, they want her out. That is until they realise she is just like them. A story of overcoming differences, and also with a little look at the global warming effect. It is written by the ever fabulous David Walliams and is a lovely book to read.

The Smeds and the Smoos*

There seems to be a recurrent theme in this edition, of differences and accepting everyone who is not like us. This is Julia Donaldson’s latest offering and it is fabulous. The Smeds don’t like the Smoos and the Smoos don’t like the Smeds. But when a young Smed falls in love with a young Smoo and they run away together, they all realise that they are actually all quite nice. A great read and a book well loved by my boys.

Scary Hairy Party*
This is another library book that has been read repeatedly. Monster is having a party and everyone wants to look their best. But after a number of disasters at the hair salon, they all look hideously scary. But it’s OK, because that is the secret party theme! This book has fab pictures and fab rhyming fun and Oscar is a big fan of it.
Grandad’s Island*
This story has been well loved by Zach, and of course, Oscar enjoys listening to it too. It is about a little boy coming to terms with the loss of his Grandad and it is written in such a beautiful way.
When the little boy goes to visit his Grandad one day, he climbs the stairs to find a massive ship. Grandad takes him on an adventure to a special island where he tells him he plans on staying. He then sends him off home with promises to write to him. When he goes the next day, the ship isn’t there and he realises his Grandad is gone. But then a very special postcard arrives so he knows that he is thinking of him wherever he is. This really is a gorgeous story and the imagery is stunning too.
So there we go. Those are the books that have been read A LOT over the last few weeks. Many of them, I thoroughly enjoy reading to the boys. That’s when I know they are really good books!
