Favourite summer holiday memories growing up – Mummascribbles
Owing to the fact that we are currently on our summer holiday (although I wouldn’t exactly call it Summer right now), I am in full on holiday post mode! I know we are a few weeks away from the actual Summer holiday season (we were naughty and took a term time one – totally approved by school), but you know you are all counting down the days, and for those with younger children, well you might already be on yours too (I hope you chose hotter and drier climes than the UK).
Of course, being on a big family holiday (there are about 14 of us here), got me thinking to my own holidays growing up. Because right now we are busy making memories for the boys. Ones they will look back on in years to come and hopefully remember fondly. The pair of them were so excited for this holiday, knowing they are spending a week with their Nanny and Grandad, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and other extended family. And I remember the excitement as a child of holidays (now I just over-stress about the journey and can’t get excited until we are there).

My Memories
I remember one specific holiday, although I can’t remember where it was, and we were staying on a farm which I thought was just epic. The owners had a sheepdog called Shep and it really made my holiday having that little doggy around.
I also remember our holidays to Butlins in Minehead, Somerset, where I was a huge fan of the Wizzy World songs. I bought the casette, listened to it A LOT, and still remember some of the songs now! Butlins kids camp is just the best right?!
Finally, I remember the journeys. It’s funny because my biggest fret is getting stuck in traffic with the kids – it gives me real anxiety; but I don’t remember ever being stuck in traffic as a kid. I do remember long journeys where we used to sing Hazard by Richard Marx over and over again, and I remember the excitement of going over the Severn Bridge every time we went to visit family in Wales. But I don’t ever remember moaning about being stuck in traffic. And there must have been times that we were!
Memories of others
It got me thinking about the memories of others, and I thought it would be lovely to share those memories. So I asked a bunch of bloggers what their favourite memories were from their holidays as a youth. Over to them!
My absolute favourite memories of family holidays are the car journeys we took to France when I was in my teens. We’d drive all the way from NW England down to the ferry, then head for the south of France on the other side. We never had a cabin on the ferry so we’d sleep on the floor. It would be my worst nightmare now with kids of my own, but I absolutely loved it at the time!
My Money Cottage
Crabbing on the harbour in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk. I went every year as a child and we have just come back from taking our own kids there – it hasn’t changed and the nostalgia was a tonic!
Ready, Freddie, Go
We used to go to the same spot in Newquay for years and years as kids. It was before all the main motorways connected so would take 8-9 hours to drive and no matter what time of the day it was or if anyone was asleep, we always played who could spot the sea first and whoever won would get an ice cream. I still do it now with my kids when we go to the seaside!
Twinderelmo
My memory is from when I was 10 I went on holiday with my Nan and she was poorly at the time so I helped her out the best a 10 year old could. One night at the club (Haven) I was called on stage and presented with a badge (still have it somewhere) to say thank you for all the help, my Nan had nominated me and sadly it was the last holiday we ever had, but it was the best.
Jade’s Long Journey
My absolute favourite holiday memories as a child were visiting my grandparents in Perranporth and walking from their house to the beach carrying our surfboards and bucket and spades. It was a long walk but worth it when we got there. 🏖 ☀️
Wood Create
Fitting in with all this rain we have been having…I remember going on a holiday to Cayton Bay, near Scarborough. I would have been about 9 I think. Anyways, it rained the entire time we were away, and on the last day it stopped long enough for us to get out of the caravan. So me and my sister are following my dad trying to navigate through the rivers that the puddles had made. We got stuck in a corner in between 2 caravans and the only way past was to jump the narrowest part. My dad jumped and was turning around to tell us to wait, he would jump back over and carry us over…except impatient 9 year old me had already jumped! Slipped in the puddle, hit the ground, and slid almost under a caravan 😂😂 I can just remember getting up covered in mud and running back to my mum who was still in the caravan, leaving my dad and younger sister crying with laughter at this huge puddle 😂😂 Its probably a boring ridiculous story to anybody else, but it still makes the whole family laugh now (and I’m 36 this year!!!)
3 Princesses And 1 Dude
Every holiday in France as a child, we used to find the really long rows of hay bales, and run, jump and climb on them for hours. It was great fun. We’d jump down and hide when we saw a car, not sure whether we’d get really told off for playing on them or not, but it was great fun.
Life As Mrs D
My favourite childhood holiday memories are the long coach journeys. I always loved to have the window seat. The snacking while on board and the laughter. Bring back a lot of memories ❤️
Uplifting And Inspiring Content
My favourite childhood holiday memory was spending my tenth birthday in a tent in the rain in Switzerland. My parents had to spend the whole day entertaining me and I got to eat a lot of Swiss chocolate. No birthday has topped it!
Craft With Cartwright
My best memory is going to Turkey when I was 10. I’m surprised I didn’t grow fins as not sure I got out of the swimming pool much! Oh and there wasn’t an iPad in sight back then!!
Back With A Bump
OK so this isn’t going to do my street cred any favours but we used to have an original VW camper van. We loved holidaying in Pembrokeshire and stayed at a campsite near to St.Davids. Every time we drove down to White Sands beach my Dad used to put my MC Hammer tape (look it up kids 😂) on really loud and we all sung ‘Here comes the Hammer’ as we drove down to the carpark. Great times, not so great music 😂
Dirt, Diggers And Dinosaurs
What lovely happy memories there are on here. I can’t wait to make these kinds of memories with our boys 🙂 What is your favourite Summer holiday memory?
