Imagine a world of driverless cars – Mummascribbles

We watched a film recently where the main protagonist had a driverless car, and it really got me thinking about not only the pros and cons of them, but also the future of driverless cars and what they would look like.

In this film, the whole driverless car thing wasn’t exactly a benefit. I mean it was great that the ‘driver’ basically became the passenger because the car was doing everything for her, but it didn’t entirely go her way because someone hacked into the car’s system, over-rode it, took her off route, and then someone killed her! It was a movie though so of course, such things wouldn’t happen in real life right?

In all honesty though, I am not sure how I feel about driverless cars. As a driver, I like the idea of being able to sit back and let the car do the driving, but I don’t know if I could ever 100% trust it. I think I would spend the whole time on edge, ready to pop it into manual override in case something went wrong!

But is that just because driverless cars aren’t currently the norm? If everyone had one, would we all just learn to trust them and be able to sit there putting our make up on, reading a book, or painting our nails?! We are off on holiday on Friday and the journey is going to take 3-4 hours. Imagine the luxury of such a journey in a driverless car!

What about other cars though? What impact would having driverless cars have on racing cars for example? This is something that Lease Car UK have been thinking about!

At the moment, the racing car is not only about the quality of the car, but also the quality of the driver behind the wheel. But what if the driver was just there to pop it into manual if they needed to? The skill would no longer be on the driver, but instead, purely on the build and quality of the car!

And what would they look like? Are driverless cars going to be all futuristic looking? The car in the movie we saw certainly was but right now, cars aren’t exactly looking futuristic!

And how about racing cars? I mean they are already pretty snazzy, but with a futuristic design, how would they look? Lease Car UK have thought a lot about #AutonomousRacing and have produced some designs that they think might be the future of racing cars!

Overall, I can’t decide whether I prefer the idea of driver control or car control. I can see both come with errors. Drivers mess up all the time, but then so does technology! Even though some companies are already testing out the driverless aspect of a car, I’m not sure I am ready for them to be a common thing on the road! What do you think? Would you go driverless or would you prefer to be fully in control of the car?
