Mummascribbles – A trip to see The Scarecrows' Wedding – Mummascribbles
You may or may not have fathomed by now that we are huge fans of all Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler books. We have the majority of them and tend to add to them when new ones come out. We basically don’t want these two people to EVER stop working with each other because we think they are amazing! We also quite like going to see the plays that various theatre companies put on of their books and so I was very excited when we were offered some tickets to go and see The Scarecrows’ Wedding.
The Scarecrows’ Wedding is their most recent creation together and is the love story of Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay who are planning their perfect wedding,
The best wedding ever, the best wedding yet, The wedding that no one will ever forget
Of course, not all goes to plan in the build up to the wedding and the play follows the story of them trying to bypass the challenges that come their way, particularly when Harry disappears on a mission for pink flowers and is replaced by the dashing Reginald!
The other half had already arranged to go to the cricket on the day that this was booked for and so myself, Zach and my mum all took the trip up to the Leicester Square Theatre to see the show. We have been to the theatre before and I forgot that it was the one that has the booster seats readily available at the back – so, so great to make it easier for small children to see!

The show is brought to us once again by Scamp Theatre who also brought us Stick Man (which I wrote about here) and they did not disappoint. Scamp Theatre was founded in 2003 by award-winning international producers Jennifer Sutherland and Louise Callow. They bring a range of theatrical live performances to audiences of all ages, with a focus on adaptation, particularly in children’s literature.
Zach once again didn’t know what we were going to see however on the way he spotted a poster for it and said “Look mummy, The Scarecrows’ Wedding…maybe that’s what we are going to see”. He’s not silly my boy and was very excited when we got there and found out he was right! He does love to point out when he’s got something right!
We didn’t have too long to wait when we sat down just ten minutes before the show was due to start although ten minutes to a three year old is very different to ten minutes in adult time so there were constant questions of “is it starting yet”?!
And then it did!
Once again Zach adored it and the adults did too. It is an hour of wonderful actors bringing the story to life. With music (played with real instruments by the cast themselves), singing, dancing and lots of happy children, it is another great success brought to us by Scamp. Zach always sits completely entranced by what is going on stage. I love seeing him laughing at the right bits, getting involved in the audience participation and clapping when necessary. It’s just the cutest thing to watch his little face completely mesmerised, completely engaged, completely happy. And they always, always manage to make it fun for the adults too – I know that my mum absolutely loved it, as did I.

Thank you once again to Scamp Theatre for bringing us another wonderful performance. Zach didn’t stop talking about it the whole way home and has since been taking his leaflet (that he picked up in the foyer) everywhere with him!
The Scarecrows’ Wedding is running right now at the Leicester Square Theatre, ending on the 4th September. You can book your tickets here.
We were very kindly sent three complimentary tickets for the purpose of this review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
