Mummascribbles – Goodness Gracious food pouches – a review – Mummascribbles

With Oscar well into the weaning stage now, we have been trying a number of different brands to see us through the times when I have forgotten to defrost his homemade purees. He never really took off with the baby led weaning and whilst it’s probably time to try and up the game a little again, purees have been the thing he loves. If ever I buy shop bought products, I always try to ensure they are organic. I don’t know why because when I make stuff at home for him, it’s not organic, but it feels different when I am buying it ready made.

There are a lot of products on the shelves that were existent when Zach was a baby, but there are also lots of new products. When the lovely people behind the Goodness Gracious food company got in touch to see if Oscar would like to sample some of their treats, I of course said yes!

Goodness Gracious Food offers the best blend of ingredients that nature allows – grown in the ground and picked from the tree. The Ayurveda-inspired organic purees are full of fruit and vegetables that are packed with goodness, are yummy to eat and easy to digest. The company was started by Katherine, a mum and yoga teacher who was frustrated with the offerings on the supermarket shelves. Katherine had been making Ayurveda teas for the mums in her prenatal and mummy and baby groups and it made her use the principles in her recipes.

In case you don’t know (because I didn’t!), Ayurveda is state of balance between the soul, mind and senses. Within an Ayurveda diet, the preparation of food is really important along with the combination of foods and what is mixed with what. For example, fruit ferments in the stomach, inhibiting digestion of other food, so it follows that we should eat fruit before other ingredients or seperately. Similarly, it is not advisable to mix fruit with meat, fish or vegetables and this principle is within the Goodness Gracious products.

The main guiding principles behind Goodness Gracious is that if Katherine’s girls can have nourishing, healthy, wholseome foods, then so can other children. There are no concentrates, no additives, no added salt or sugars. They are also free from gluten, wheat, dairy or eggs.

So, what exactly is in these purees? Here is the list of what is available:

Apple Puree Pear Puree Apple, Apricot and Cinnamon Puree Banana, Plum and Quinoa Puree Mango, Coconut Milk and Brown Rice Puree Carrot, Broccoli, Quinoa and Pea Puree Chicken, Sweet Potato and Spinach Puree with Mint and Lemon Juice Pumpkin and Coconut Milk Puree with Cardamom Kale, Parsnip, Courgette Quinoa Puree with Cumin and Fennel Seeds

Sweet Potato, Butternut Squash and Carrot Puree

And what did Oscar think?

When I first tried Oscar on these, we were in the very early stages of weaning and honestly, he wasn’t keen on anything that was being put in his mouth if it wasn’t mummy milk! So, I held back a bit and waited until he had got to grips with other flavours so that I could review these properly, and finally when he tried them again, he was much more keen. I think at first he found the Cinnamon based one was a bit exotic for his tastebuds, pulling that brilliant face that all babies pull when they experience such a bold flavour for the first time! After a few mouthfuls though, he started to enjoy it and by the time he had the second pouch of it, he was a fan.

He also tried some of the quinoa based ones as well and these went down a treat. And when I was feeding him, I felt like he was getting really wholesome food which made me happy! The Pear Puree was probably one of his most favourite (is there a baby out there that doesn’t like pear when they first start weaning?!).

Of course, as his weaning was slow and he only ate very small amounts, I did give myself the odd serving of these purees so as not to cause wastage (!) and I can concur that they are really tasty!

If you would like to get your hands on some of these tasty weaning treats then check out the list of UK stores where they are available or you can simply order online.
