Mummascribbles – Mummascribbles meets…The Peachicks Bakery – Mummascribbles

This week we meet the lovely Midge from The Peachicks Bakery. Thanks so much for taking part Midge 🙂

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your family
Hubby (aka Daddy Peacock) and I met at school and have been together for a VERY long time! We have had our moments and definitely don’t see eye-to-eye on everything but it works.  Together we live in the South with the 3 Peachicks who range in age from 8 down to 3.  I have brittle allergic asthma which basically means my lungs take offence to foods/pollen/medications and have almighty tantrums.  Unfortunately the Peachicks have inherited a lot of these allergies but they seem pretty well under control most of the time.  I should also mention my car, Roxy, she is quite old but I’ve had her since new (I did live out of her at one point) and the Peachicks treat her like one of the family!

When it comes to other family it gets a bit complicated.  There are a lot of them.  Hubby’s parents and one set of my grandparents live nearby and although they live a fair distance we are also close to my Dad, Stepmum & sister plus other grandparents.  Then there are our Aunties, Uncles and cousins plus children who we definitely don’t see enough of but it’s so lovely when we do!  Oh and then there are all our friends who make up The Peachicks’ honorary Aunties and Uncles.

What do you like doing to be you, when you are not parenting, working (if you do), or blogging?
I swim.  I go early morning on my own to the local pool and rack up a couple of miles at a time.  It’s my time to think, make decisions and just generally chill out.  I also quite like the silence of being under the water, between my Peachicks and the littlies at work quiet is hard to come by!  Last Autumn I completed a sponsored swim for Aspire, to swim the distance of the channel over 12weeks; this year I’m hoping to go there and back!

I also love photography, my camera was one of the first Lumix’s to come out and it’s usually in my handbag.  I can’t claim to be the best or even a good photographer but I take photos of things I like or moments I want to remember.  Oh and wildlife, especially bugs!

What is your biggest achievement to date?
The Peachicks

From your own experiences, what do you find the hardest part of parenting and what is the easiest/most rewarding part?
I find a lot of the time that I feel like I can’t win.  No matter what I do someone tells me I am wrong or disagrees with how we are bringing up the Peachicks.  The hardest part of parenting is not ignoring other people but learning to overcome the self doubt that these comments inspire!

I have yet to find an easy bit.  If anyone finds one can they let me know!! The most rewarding bit is watching the Peachicks grow into kind, happy, independent girls; not that we ever claim to have been responsible for any of it!  Don’t get me wrong they are not angels 100% of the time but I reckon a bit of character is probably a good thing!

Parenting in itself is no mean feat; how do you juggle everything you need to in order to get everything done on a daily basis?
Teamwork.  Hubby is a hands-on dad and the Peachicks are very helpful as we have always encouraged them to be fairly independent.  ALSO fortunately(?!)  the Ginger Peachick is a horrible sleeper – so my days are quite long.

Why did you decide to start blogging?
There are a few reasons.  I don’t have a lot of photos and things from when I was little so it was important for me that the Peachicks have a record of their childhood and our family life.  Besides, I tried scrapbooking but they are all still half empty!  I also decided that if they had inherited my allergies the least I could do was pass on things to make living with them easier either as they leave home and/or have their own littlies.

Tell me a bit about your blog?
It’s primarily a recipe book, but crucially one the Peachicks can’t argue over, unlike my poor one I made in uni that has fallen apart at the seams.  It’s also a place for me to (hopefully) leave advice in a place they can find it, although obviously I am hoping we have a much better relationship than I do with my own mother!

What do you want your blog to achieve and where do you hope to see it go as it grows?
Obviously like a lot of bloggers I’d love it to become more than a hobby but whether I could actually give up teaching or not when it came to it I don’t know.  Short term I’d like to hope it is helping parents of new itchy-scratchies feel a little bit less isolated and a little bit less lost.  Long term the plan has always been for it to be something the Peachicks can look back on when they are older, enjoy and use as advice or hopefully add to!

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about starting a blog?
Do it. If you enjoy it carry on. If not, don’t!  Oh and don’t let it become everything, life is so much more important!

If you could have dinner with three people (dead or alive), who would it be and why?

1. David Attenborough – He is the reason I did Zoology and then became a teacher!

2. My Great Nanny – I’d just like a catch up and get her opinion on a few things.  Also we named our oldest after her and I’d like her to know!

3. Daddy Peacock – It would be nice to have dinner with him, I don’t remember the last time it happened without one (or all) of the Peachicks either interrupting or ‘helping’ us eat it!

Tell me three random facts about you

1. I have a degree in Marine Zoology and used to work in an Aquarium.

2. I love sunny, snowy winter days!

3. I can write with both hands – and upside down too!
