Mummascribbles – Review & GIVEAWAY! The Fairytale Hairdresser and the Little Mermaid – Mummascribbles

When the opportunity came up to review a newly released children’s book called The Fairytale Hairdresser and the Little Mermaid, I decided that I would go against the initial ‘that looks like it’s for girls’ thoughts and instead asked for a copy to be sent to me.

About the book

The Fairytale Hairdresser and the Little Mermaid is written by Abie Longstaff and illustrated by Lauren Beard. It is the sixth book in the Fairytale Hairdresser series and is all about portraying strong women getting themselves out of tricky situations. In this book, the nasty Sea Witch tricks the Little Mermaid when she asks her to make her human. She develops her much longed for legs but then realises the Sea Witch has taken her beautiful singing voice away in return. When she decides that she would rather have her voice, the girls go back to retrieve it but get captured by the Sea Witch and it is up to the fairytale hairdresser, also known as Kittie Lacie, to use her skills to help her friend escape and get her voice back.

What we thought of the book
Firstly, it is absolutely beautiful. The illustrations are just gorgeous and there is so much to see on every page that it enabled us to make a game of spotting and naming things, particularly sea creatures. Zach got involved in asking questions, particularly about the mermaid’s tail! The story is simple, sweet and features your normal fairytale themes including a meanie, a hero (hoorah for Kittie), and a budding romance with a prince! It also features pictures of other fairytale characters that can be spotted throughout – Zach particularly liked finding the gingerbread man at the end of the book.

Is there anything we didn’t like?
Not really no! It’s slightly unfortunate for us that the main character is called Kittie as this is what Zach called our cat who we recently had to say goodbye to. Every time I referred to Kittie, he said where’s kitty, kitty’s back?! So, upon reading this next time, I may just have to change the name of the character to save confusion!

Overall, we enjoyed reading this book and I especially loved all the beautiful illustrations.

The book is available from 7th May and you can pre-order it at Amazon. You can also click here to see a Youtube Q&A session with the author Abie Longstaff.
