Mummascribbles – The birthday cake – Mummascribbles

I am in no way a baker. I make pretty tasty cakes but I’m the least artistic person ever! It is my aim however to always bake Zach’s birthday cake.

I made his first birthday cake with huge success. It was my biggest cake ever but it went down a treat and so I was feeling the pressure this year!

I knew all along that I wanted to do a Thomas cake. I knew I didn’t have time to even think about attempting a 3D cake so I had a little look online for some ideas and then knew what I wanted to do. I got all the ingredients throughout the week and I was ready to go.

So last night I started the bake. I’d decided on a 10in round cake and found a recipe online. It went in the oven and after about an hour and fifteen minutes later it came out looking like this…

I was worried. It was messy. I wasn’t sure it was cooked inside and I wasn’t sure that it wasn’t going to fall apart but I wrapped it in clingfilm, left it overnight and would return to it this morning for a decorating attempt.

First I made up a ton of buttercream icing to crumb coat it and once that was done I left it in the fridge for half an hour to set. Once out I done another layer of buttercream then left it while I prepared the icing.

Once the icing was ready (blimey that was hard work!) I added some jam to the cake and it was ready for icing. The only bit I had physical help with was lifting the icing onto the cake. I then smoothed it all out and made it look nice 🙂

Next up was the detail. I decided to do train tracks in the shape of a 2, hills all around the side and then add the Thomas cake toppers I found on eBay.

Like I said, I’m not arty, it doesn’t look perfect but I was so proud of myself and my little boy loved it! I just wished we’d remembered to take a photo of him blowing the candles out 🙁
