Our weekend happy – baths, rockets, colouring and science! – Mummascribbles

I haven’t written one of these posts for a good few weeks now but I thought that under the current circumstances, with us all locked up and with no-where to go, I would focus on the happy moments that we have all managed to have. I am not going to lie, I have been wondering how on earth my children were going to cope with not being able to go out, but it turns out that I have a couple of home-birds who have adjusted pretty well so far. I do sense a bit of cabin fever, but this weekend wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it might be.

Saturday 28th March

We had quite a lazy morning – the kids played and went on holiday, Zach helped Oscar with his letters, and after we had breakfast, I decided that I was going to treat myself to a bath – because for once I had all the time in the world to have one! I read some of my book in there and was only disturbed by the kids once. It was a lush hour all to myself – much needed!

While I was in the bath, the boys had been helping out the other half with a little sort out and re-jig of the front room. They then joined me while I was upstairs getting ready, and watched some Peter Rabbit, and then once I was ready, the other half took the dog for his walk and I made the boys and I lunch. We all had a picnic style platter which was a bit more fun than a sarnie which I have gotten a little bored of! Once the other half was home, he had lunch and then he and then cleaned out the fish tank while I sorted out the mess that was the craft drawers. The boys helped Daddy a little bit then soon got distracted by trying to build a den with their set. They struggled a bit and so when the other half was finished, he built them a rocket which they had loads of fun with.

Earlier on, Zach had asked me if they could have a bath like mine – by which he meant deep – and I had said yes. He decided that he wanted them to have it before dinner, so we ran it for them and they spent ages in there. I read two books to them because he had also wanted to read like I did but I didn’t trust him to not accidentally dip a book in the bath water. Once they had been in there long enough, we grabbed them out, popped them in their pj’s, and the roast was almost ready so they sat and watched a bit of TV while they waited for it, and I sat and started a colouring book that I had found – I fancied doing something a little different for once.

Dinner was had, I took the dog for his evening walk, and then when I got home, it was time to get the boys to bed. When I got downstairs, I popped the TV on and finished the colouring I had started, while the other half played computer games.

Sunday 29th March

As per Saturday, there was no rush – and in fact, the boys woke up later than they have in a long time. I know the clocks went forward but Oscar didn’t get up until gone 8am – the past week or so he has been awake at 5.45 each morning, so it was a very welcome change! We pottered around having breakfast and then we got ready. I had decided I was going to do the big dog walk as I had only been doing the shorter evening ones for a while, although it was really windy which didn’t make for a hugely pleasant one!

When I got home, the boys had started on a little Christmas jigsaw puzzle and it was lunchtime so we sorted out some food. I had promised Zach that we would start an experiment he wanted to do from one of his science kits and so we did the start of that, creating a sticky gelatine that we would be using to see the difference between a clean swab and a dirty swab! We had to leave it to set for 2 hours and then Oscar wanted to do another experiment so we did some more for a while.

I then suggested putting a film on. Everyone settled on Toy Story 4 without any arguments and we all sat down to watch it together. It meant that I started dinner a bit later than usual (homemade lasagne so it takes a fair while), but it was totally worth it.

The other half did the rest of the experiment with Zach and Oscar which meant taking swabs of their clean hands and stinky toes, I cooked, and then the boys played together again for a bit. Once the food was in the oven, the other half took the dog out and I video called my Mum for a catch up. Then the other half came home, dinner was ready, it was eaten, and then it was bedtime! We read some stories and I had to inform the boys that despite it being light outside, it was actually time to go to sleep! When I went downstairs, I made a cuppa and sat and wrote this post.

I am super happy that there were so many happy moments over the weekend. Even though there were plenty of arguments between the boys, they did so much playing together, it really was lovely. And nobody picked up an iPad or tablet for the whole weekend!
